Focus of research

In order to understand marine biogeochemical systems, our research focuses on processes that redistribute chemical elements (i.e. C,N,P,Si,Fe,Ca) in ocean waters. My research interest lies on cellular processes of marine organisms such as photosynthesis, nutrient uptake, and calcification. Even though these processes act on small (cellular) scales, they have strong effects on the biogeochemistry in large ocean regions due to the large number of cells involved.

At the ZMT, I mainly focus on coral calcification and its relation to ocean acidity. I am implementing a cell model that will help us to identify potential responses of coral calcification to changes in ocean pH. However, before studying the effect of varying pH to calcification, we have to better understand the allocation of metabolic energy to the activity of the membrane-bound calcium pumps.
