13/12/2019 | ZMT mangrove ecologist Prof. Dr. Martin Zimmer recently consulted with El Salvador’s Vice Minister for Environment and Natural Resources, Dr. Alex Hasbun, as well as the Ministry’s Director of Ecosystems and Biodiversity, Ing. Miguel Gallardo, and the Manager of Natural Protected Areas and Biological Corridors, Ing. Javier Magaña, about the ZMT acting as scientific advisor for mangrove restauration in the Central American country.

Following the promising talks, Professor Zimmer opened the "First Tri-national Research Symposium on Coastal Marine Resources" at the BMZ-funded field station of environmental protection agency CODDEFFAGOLF, which is based on Isla Al Pácar off the coast of Honduras in the Golfo de Fonseca. At the event the mangrove ecologist held a keynote on "Marine Natural Resource Management and Climate Change".

Serving as a model system for the tension between use and protection, the Golfo de Fonseca, shared by El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua, is currently going through substantial changes and development towards sustainable coastal and marine resource management. Throughout this process, the ZMT agreed to serve as scientific advisor, particularly for implementing the Traffic Light Concept for sustainable ecosystem management and ecosystem design of degraded mangrove areas.
