12/04/2024 | As the UN Ocean Decade Conference is taking place in Barcelona from 10th to 12th April 2024, members of the Partnership for Observation of the Global Ocean (POGO) have come together to highlight the need for sustained, operational, and coordinated biological observation of the ocean, taking advantage of the recent development and expansion of biomolecular observation technologies and initiatives. On behalf of ZMT and as a member of Partnership for Observation of the Global Ocean (POGO), our director Raimund Bleischwitz has signed this important declaration.

POGO is a forum created in 1999 by directors and leaders of major oceanographic institutions around the world to promote and support global ocean observing. POGO’s membership includes 57 of the world’s leading ocean science and technology institutions in 32 countries.
As a Decade Implementing Partner and lead organisation for the Ocean Biomolecular Observing Network (OBON) Decade Programme, POGO, together with associated stakeholders, calls on world leaders, funders, industry, scientists and civil society organisations present at the UN Ocean Decade Conference, to adopt measures individually and collectively to sustain and greatly expand biomolecular ocean observations globally, to provide a basis for understanding current and future changes in biodiversity for the ultimate protection and restoration of our marine ecosystems.
