13/07/2023 | A newly published anthology addresses how the cultural and natural sectors can work together to advance the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The background for the publication is the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by the global community in 2015, which set out concrete target agreements in 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

In the anthology, 37 renowned experts from the fields of culture, environmental protection and nature conservation, social associations, trade unions, business and science discuss various aspects such as achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, access to quality education for all, enabling clean energy, or measures for climate protection and the protection of oceans and terrestrial ecosystems. The volume also includes a contribution by Prof. Dr. Raimund Bleischwitz, scientific director of the ZMT, on the topic of tomorrow's energy supply.

"We need a cultural shift toward sustainability - individually, as a society, and internationally. This volume is so exciting to read because this message becomes clear and yet highly diverse perspectives are heard. The UN Sustainable Development Goals require the commitment of many, gladly including us at the ZMT and our many international partnerships," says Raimund Bleischwitz.

The texts are preceded by a foreword by Claudia Roth, Minister of State for Culture, and an introduction by Olaf Zimmermann, Executive Director of the German Cultural Council, and Hubert Weiger, President of the German Academy for Nature Conservation and Honorary Chairman of BUND. As they point out, sustainable development can only succeed through cultural change.

The publication is edited by the German Cultural Council, which regularly publishes books on cultural policy issues. The German Cultural Council is the umbrella organization of the federal cultural associations. It is the point of contact for federal, state and European Union politicians and administrators in matters of cultural policy. Its goal is to stimulate cultural policy discussion at all political levels and to advocate for freedom of art, publication and information.
