12.6.17 | The Open Campus held by the University of Bremen is just around the corner. On Saturday, June 17 2017 from 2:00 pm the Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT) will also be present at the so-called "Mile of Marquees". At ZMT's stand the topic is diving. The institute will inform about its courses for scientific diving and send visitors on a journey through a virtual coral reef with the help of a VR headset.

ZMT is a training facility certified by the German Berufsgenossenschaft and a member of the Commission for Research Diving Germany (KFT). Students and scientists who need to employ diving for their work can apply for the courses. ZMT offers practical modules in Germany and its tropical partner countries. At the ZMT marquee the instructors, Sebstian Ferse, Stefanie Bröhl und Ulrich Pint, will give an insight into the training and show their diving equipment. Visitors can try out masks, BCD vests and scuba tanks.

Afterwards visitors can try out their diving skills but with another type of equipment. Using a virtual reality headset (Oculus Rift) and a controller they can dive into a coral reef - a virtual one - where they can discover different species and life forms of the reef. VR divers can find out exciting information about the reef organisms but also learn about some of the dangers threading the coral reefs. The complex visualization has been developed by the IT department of ZMT together with coral reef ecologists from the institute.

ZMT is also taking part in the lecture series at Open Campus. Prof. Dr. Anna-Katharina Hornidge, Professor for Social Sciences in the Marine Tropics at the University if Bremen and head of the Social Sciences department at ZMT will be holding a German-language talk on "The research vessel as a location for interdisciplinary knowledge production" (MZH, Room 1090, 2:00 pm).
