15.05.2018 | In honour of Elisabeth Mann Borgese, who would have celebrated her 100th birthday on April 24 this year, renowned experts in literature and marine sciences will look back on the life of the famous "Lawyer of the Seas" at a festive ceremony in Friedrichshafen on May 17, 2018.

In 1972, Mann Borgese founded the International Ocean Institute (IOI) in Malta. On behalf of the IOI, Prof. Dr. Anna-Katharina Hornidge, head of the Department of Social Sciences at ZMT and Professor of Social Sciences in the Marine Tropics at the University of Bremen, will speak about the German branch of the institute.

The Co-President of the Club of Rome, Prof. Dr. Dr. Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker, will talk about Elisabeth Mann Borgese's role as founding member and first female member of the Club of Rome, while writer and filmmaker Peter K. Wehrli will share personal memories of the "Lady of the Oceans" in his lecture "Im Auton von Italien nach Indien".

Karolina Kühn, literary scholar and exhibition curator at the Stiftung Buch-, Medien- und Literaturhaus München will give further insights into the life of Mann Borgese who played a decisive role in organising the first International Conference on Maritime Law and in concluding the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. The festive event is organised by the German OceanFoundation.
