Safer materials for future technologies
Advanced materials support technologies such as energy storage and biomedicine. Their complex structures can also pose risks to people and the environment. The Leibniz Research Alliance Advanced Materials Safety (AMS) investigates these risks throughout the material life cycle.
Safety and sustainability by design
The alliance develops approaches that consider safety early in material design. In its second funding phase, it expands this work to sustainability, including resource and energy efficiency. Five two-year postdoctoral projects bring together expertise from different partner institutes.
Marine research at ZMT
Together with ISAS, ZMT investigates how nanomaterials affect the functioning of marine organisms. With INM, it studies safe, sustainable and degradable sensor materials. The aim is to reduce electronic waste from environmental and infrastructure monitoring.
In the first funding phase, ZMT studied how microplastics and nanoplastics affect marine organisms and enter their carbonate skeletons.
