Research data management at ZMT
The full potential of research data can only be realised through professional research data management (RDM) that ensures transparency, sustainability and efficient use. The Research Data Service supports ZMT scientists and partners in the tropics with needs-based solutions for efficient research data management (RDM) throughout the entire research cycle. We develop and operate data infrastructures, workflows and tools. Our expertise covers institutional and applied RDM in the natural and social sciences as well as geodata. We share our knowledge through workshops, events and collaborations, with a focus on research data relevant to the tropics. Our goal is to improve the accessibility, reproducibility and long-term usability of data, thereby ensuring management in accordance with the highest standards.

Research data at ZMT: FAIR, CARE, TRUST – For transparent and sustainable science
Data is becoming increasingly extensive and diverse – and therefore more valuable. Particularly in interdisciplinary tropical research, it enables comparative analyses, large-scale evaluations and meta-analyses across space and time.
But good research needs more than just data – it needs responsible handling of that data. At ZMT, we are committed to ensuring that research data:
- is FAIR: findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable;
- is made as open as possible (‘as open as possible, as closed as necessary’, Open Science in Horizon Europe);
- is collected and processed according to the CARE principles to protect the interests and rights of indigenous communities: collective benefit, control, accountability and ethics;
- is published in trustworthy repositories that comply with the TRUST principles: transparency, accountability, user orientation, sustainability and technology.
Only in this way can science be reproducible, transparent and sustainable.
