Summary

The coastal region of Peru contributes to significant economic output. To protect the coastal ecosystem services and adapt to climate change, there is a need to develop and integrate ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) measures into coastal and marine zone management. For this reason, PARAWET will support the interpretation and communication of climate change relevant, ecological and socio-economic information of coastal wetlands in the Piura province. In addition, PARAWET will support IMARPE with the development of the Coastal Marine Atlas of Peru, a geospatial tool for information management and decision making to strengthen management at the local, regional and national level.

Activities

  • Participatory vulnerability assessments and monitoring to understand the potential for EbA:
Assessing Blue Carbon stocks of mangroves
    Wetland biomass monitoring
Assessing fishing communities’ vulnerability to climate change of coastal wetlands
  • Workshops and knowledge exchange among stakeholders for (1) wetland vulnerability analyses and science (2) sustainable fishing and eco-tourism development, and (3) to support project designs for EbA
  • Dissemination of project results to stakeholders and the public
