Summary

The coastal region of Peru contributes to significant economic output. To protect the coastal ecosystem services and adapt to climate change, there is a need to develop and integrate ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) measures into coastal and marine zone management. For this reason, PARAWET will support the interpretation and communication of climate change relevant, ecological and socio-economic information of coastal wetlands in the Piura province. In addition, PARAWET will support IMARPE with the development of the Coastal Marine Atlas of Peru, a geospatial tool for information management and decision making to strengthen management at the local, regional and national level.

Activities

  • Participatory vulnerability assessment and monitoring to understand the potential for EbA
  • Assessing Blue Carbon stocks
  • Technical support to integrate geospatial datasets in the marine atlas for coastal management
  • Capacity development for processing and visualization of geospatial information
  • Workshops and knowledge exchange between stakeholders for (1) eco-tourism development and sustainable fishing and (2) to support project designs for EbA in fisheries projects
  • Dissemination of project results to stakeholders and the public
