AANChOR (All AtlaNtic Cooperation for Ocean Research and Innovation)

AANChOR promotes the implementation of the South Atlantic Research and Innovation Flagship Initiative and related Belém Statement. Various partners from 5 European, 2 South American, and 2 African countries will identify and contribute to the implementation of concrete, long-term collaborative activities, reinforcing international cooperation between Europe and Tropical and South Atlantic countries and connecting the challenges and research needs of the North Atlantic Ocean.

CSA AANCHOR

Work package structure and relations between the different WPs. The interface between the WP1 and the BSIC (entity that is not part of the CSA) is done through a High-Level board, which recommends potential joint pilot actions and receives from the BSIC the approval or disapproval of these actions.

Objectives

  • Launch a multistakeholder platform to identify and address collaborative activities
    • Reinforce capacity building
    • Promote academia-industry knowledge transfer for an enhanced ocean innovation
    • Develop common standards
    • Enhance citizen awareness and ocean literacy
    • Converge and align R&I infrastructure initiatives
    • Build on ongoing national and international initiatives such as the All Atlantic Ocean Research Alliance
  • Support the identification of the most appropriate existing funding mechanisms and tools for further development of the selected activities
  • Provide seed money for the first development stages of selected joint pilot actions
  • Define long-term measures for the sustainability of the cooperation framework beyond the lifetime of the CSA

German Marine Research Consortium (KDM) as Official AANChOR Partner

Konsortium Deutsche Meeresforschung, also known as KDM or German Marine Research Consortium, is an official AANChOR partner. On behalf of KDM, ZMT manages key aspects of the project, including leading Work Package 3 - Capacity Development and Work Package 5 - Information & Data Sharing, as well as contributing to other work package tasks. ZMT is mandated to bring German marine science into South Atlantic cooperation and assure the involvement of interested scientists from all KDM-partner institutions.

AK Südatlantik

The AK Südatlantik, a working committee comprising various KDM members, will serve as a bi-directional hub for information and participation in the AANChOR Coordination and Support Action, and Belém process in general. The goal of the AK Südatlantik is to collect German marine science interests in the Belém process. ZMT’s Werner Ekau was elected speaker of the AK Südatlantik at the first AANChOR consolidating meeting in September 2018.

Work Packages

ZMT’s Werner Ekau and Nicolas Dittert took over the lead of the two work packages at the AANChOR kick-off meeting in Brussels in October 2018. Wendy Namisnik and Birte Pfeiffer joined ZMT in February 2019 to support ZMT’s work on AANChOR.
