AANChOR (All AtlaNtic Cooperation for Ocean Research and Innovation)

The All Atlantic Ocean Research Alliance Flagship is an initiative of the European Union to upscale research activities in the North and South Atlantic, and to build a platform for cooperation reaching from the Arctic to Antarctic waters. It follows the 2017 signing of the so-called Belém Statement on Atlantic Research and Innovation Cooperation and will provide a framework to identify and contribute to the implementation of concrete long-term collaborative activities, reinforcing international cooperation between Europe and tropical and South Atlantic countries, and connecting these endeavours with the challenges and research needs of the North Atlantic Ocean.

To contribute to the development and implementation of the identified joint activities, AANChOR will establish multi stakeholder platforms and stimulate pilot projects to develop and support new forms and tools for further development of the selected activities and identify appropriate existing funding mechanisms.

German Marine Research Consortium (KDM) as official AANChOR partner

The German Marine Research Consortium (KDM) is the official partner in AANChOR; ZMT manages the project on behalf of KDM and takes the lead in two work packages Capacity Development and Information & Data Sharing. ZMT has the mandate to bring the German Marine Science into the South Atlantic cooperation and assure the involvement of interested scientists from all KDM-partner institutions.

As a technical instrument the “AK Südatlantik” shall accompany the process. This working committee serves as bi-directional hub for information and participation in the AANChOR Coordination and Support Action and the Belém process in general. The goal of the AK is to collect interests of the German marine science in the Belém process.

A first consolidating meeting was held in September 2018, during which ZMT’s Werner Ekau has been elected as speaker of the AK Südatlantik.

A month later (October 18 to 19, 2018) the AANChOR kick-off meeting took place in Brussels, where Werner Ekau (Capacity Development) and Nicolas Dittert from ZMT (Scientific Data Management) took over the lead of two work packages.
