ZMT Networking Event Marine Bioeconomy: Science meets Business

Since 1991, the Bremen-based Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT) has been providing the scientific basis for a sustainable use of tropical coasts and seas. It is the only scientific institute in Germany that investigates tropical and subtropical coastal ecosystems and their importance for nature and people.  In order to support economic application of its continuously growing research knowledge, ZMT actively conducts the transdisciplinary transfer of knowledge and technology in the wider Bremen region.

In this context, ZMT strives to establish a network of various companies and research institutions targeting the tropical marine bioeconomy and its relevance for the German economy. The institute is now inviting key stakeholders to a networking event on May 17 and 18 to develop regional and international science-business cooperations between the local economy, ZMT, and partners abroad with a view to develop an innovative bioeconomy that benefits tropical and German markets and societies. During the event, the participants use their synergies to identify economically applicable research needs and develop joint practical solutions. This includes establishing new and strengthening existing partnerships, exchanging expertise, and promoting concrete cooperative science-business transfer projects.

The scope of the event targets different economic sectors, such as sustainable aquaculture and fisheries as well as coastal infrastructure with specific products and services in the seafood, life science, pharmaceutical, cosmetics, fertiliser and feed production sectors as well as in harbor and water management and digital technologies. The network covers a spectrum of actors for short- and long-term establishment of sustainable management, from basic science to infrastructure construction, capacity development, and product processing for use on local to global markets.

In addition to presentations, pitches, and poster exhibitions from scientists and businesses, the focus lies on joint workshops for developing and corroborating cooperation strategies and chances. The event will accommodate up to 65 participants from the government, economic, NGO, and science sectors at ZMT facilities. The event will be held in English, but there is the possibility to have side discussions in German.
