10/03/2021 | On March 17 at 14.30 (CET), ZMT is hosting a glittering afternoon event - a virtual panel discussion on “How can data management initiatives facilitate environmental sustainability in the tropics?”. The panel discussion will be held in the wake of ZMT's Alumni Conference on “Data management and collaboration for tackling marine challenges”. It has been organised by the ZMT Academy and ZMT's digital inititiave DigiZ with support from the German Exchange Service DAAD.
THE DISCUSSION
The management of research data, in particular of international collaborative projects is always a challenge. Technical infrastructures, scientific ethics, administrative challenges, and undefined data ownerships can hinder initiatives for joint data usages. This can be even more challenging if only limited budgets are available for data management. Like other institutes, ZMT, which strongly relies on long-lasting and trustful partnerships faces the challenges to develop joint data strategies. In the course of the newly established workgroup Data Science and Technology and the digital ZMT initiative DigiZ, the institute aims to offer user-friendly and safe data infrastructures and to formulate basic guidelines for international collaborative data projects.
With four international experts, we want to discuss critical issues of data management in the Global South and identify the potential of data initiatives as a backbone for marine resource management and conservation.
