17.5.16 | This year’s European Maritime Day (EMD) conference is dedicated to “Blue Growth”. From May 18 to 19 more than 1,000 representatives from the European Union, the European Commission, from the maritime industry and science are gathering in the Finnish city of Turku to discuss smart and sustainable investment in marine and maritime business sectors. The Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT) is also taking part in the two-day meeting: On May 18, Prof. Dr. Anna-Katharina Hornidge is holding a talk on “Governance Challenges for Deep-Sea Resources and the Role of Science”.

The sociologist is one of four researchers from Germany, the UK and Belgium speaking as part of a science-policy workshop on “Knowledge-based Governance of Deep-Sea Resources”.

Prof. Hornidge’s talk is closely connected to the OceanGov Network project, which unites 58 international partners to develop science-based ocean governance tools and to advise political stakeholders on different levels of governance. The project, coordinated by Prof. Hornidge, is funded by the EU-COST Action for a period of four years.
