26/08/2020 | On September 9, 2020 at 6:00 pm, the U Bremen Research Alliance invites interested parties to a moderated online discussion on the topic "National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI): New Perspectives in Cooperative Science". Registration for participation is still open at www.uni-bremen.de/research-alliance/nfdi

The goal of the NFDI is to systematically develop, sustainably secure and give access to data from science and research, as well as connecting it (inter)nationally.

But does archiving and making data available in national and international contexts really lead to more cooperative science and an increase in knowledge?

In order to enable sustainable and highly cooperative science, it seems necessary, in addition to the multidisciplinary storage of data, to ensure international interoperability in the NFDI which increases the capacity for knowledge, contributes to the development of new research fields and generally increases scientific knowledge.

Does this mean that the perspective for the development of the NFDI lies in the "key scientific discipline" of data science, as formulated by the German Gesellschaft für Informatik? Does the exchange and combination of research data also require an ethical-philosophical discourse and, consequently, new framework guidelines?

These are just some of the topics of the online discussion with:

Sabine Brünger-Weilandt
Chairwoman of the Information Infrastructure Council (2014 - 2016, Director and Managing Director of FIZ Karlsruhe - Leibniz Institute for Information Infrastructure GmbH

Prof. Dr. York Sure-Vetter Director of the NFDI
Professor for Web Science at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT)

Prof. Dr. Iris Pigeot
Co-Speaker NFDI4 Health, Professor of Statistics at the University of Bremen, Director of the Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology - BIPS and Deputy Chairwoman of the U Bremen Research Alliance

Prof. Dr. Frank Oliver Glöckner
Spokesperson NFDI4 BioDiversity, Member of the Council for Information Infrastructures (2014-2018), Professor for Earth System Data Sciences at the University of Bremen, Head of the Data Division at the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research; and General Manager of PANGAEA, the Information System for Earth and Environmental Sciences

Prof. Dr. Rolf Drechsler
Spokesman of the Data Science Center of the University of Bremen; Professor of Computer Architecture at the University of Bremen and Director at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI)

Moderation: Jan-Martin Wiarda

Registration is mandatory. Registered persons will receive the access link by e-mail a few days before the event.

Further information on the event:

After a welcoming address by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Bernd Scholz-Reiter (Chair of the U Bremen Research Alliance) and State Councillor Tim Cordßen (Senator for Science and Ports, Free Hanseatic City of Bremen), the above-mentioned experts from the scientific community, former members of the Council for Information Infrastructures (RFII) and representatives of the NFDI will discuss the topic. Questions and own contributions to the discussion can be posted via a chat system and will be passed on to the discussants by the moderator.

About the U Bremen Research Alliance

The state of Bremen is home to a unique research infrastructure. The U Bremen Research Alliance consists of the University of Bremen and ten research institutes of the four German scientific organisations based in the state plus the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) . More than 6,000 people work for the Alliance's partner institutions.
