21/09/2021 | Our world is currently at a significant turning point. Actively managed and holistic transformations are needed to provide alternatives to the otherwise probably catastrophe-driven processes of change.
Socio-ecological transformations are complex and contested; and so are views on what role science should and can play in these transformations. The UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development endorses the call for science to play an active role in transformations towards sustainability: Science should not only contribute to the understanding of transformation processes, but also actively contribute to sustainability changes.
Transdisciplinary approaches are a promising way to create knowledge that promotes transformations. Transdisciplinarity means integrating knowledge not only across scientific disciplines, but also across knowledge systems of different societal actors. Problem definition, goal setting and knowledge production as collaborative processes between stakeholders are at the core of transdisciplinary projects. This enables the discovery of more relevant and creative methods for solving complex societal problems.
In this seminar, the Heinrich Böll Foundation and the Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research invites to jointly reflect on the role of science. We want to explore what transdisciplinarity actually means and how it unfolds the potential to support transformations towards sustainability.
- How do transformations unfold and through which mechanisms can the co-production of knowledge and knowledge exchange support transformative change towards sustainable socio-ecological system dynamics?
- What roles can scientific research play in this? What demands do these roles place on science?
- What relationship between science, civil society and the state is necessary for a socio-ecological transformation and how can this relationship be achieved?
Talks will introduce the topic and we will then explore the above-mentioned questions through group work and expert discussions. With expertise from academia and civil society, we aim to take a look at the topic from different angles. All participants are invited to reflect on transdisciplinary aspects of their own (research) activities and to engage in direct exchange with each other and our speakers.
