09/05/2023 | In the new episode of Bremen two's popular podcast "Ans Meer - Geschichten zwischen Wasser und Land" (To the Sea - Stories between Water and Land), Lara Stuthmann has her say this time. She is a PhD student at the ZMT and is conducting research in Vietnam and at the ZMT on a very special seaweed and how its nutritional value could be increased: the sea grape, also called green caviar.

Nha Trang - Researching the superfood algae in Vietnam

Sea grape is an edible type of algae. It is cultivated - and researched - in Vietnam. Bremen marine biologist Lara Stuthmann spent several months in the coastal town of Nha Trang. Where others vacation because of the long sandy beaches, Lara has found out fascinating things about the vegetable from the sea. What exactly, and why the algae is a food for the future, she tells podcast host Katharina Guleikoff in this episode. Lara even brings along a serving of sea grapes and together they do the taste test: Does the algae live up to the promise of its nickname, "green caviar"?

About the podcast "To the sea”

This podcast dives, sails along coasts and moors to tell stories between water and land. Whether deserted islands, harbour metropolises or underwater worlds: In each episode, we learn about a place in the world for which the sea plays a crucial role.

Podcast host Katharina Guleikoff invites travellers and scientists to tell us about their adventures - and Katharina visits people who live by the sea. They tell us what should be on the packing list, what you should have tasted and what you should bring back as a souvenir. “To the Sea” is a Bremen Two production.
