Unveiling Fishing in Wetland Systems. A Peruvian case study adapting to potential climate change scenarios

Ivonne Vivar, ZMT consultant for the PARAWET project, will present her work to support with vulnerability analyses to climate change for our focal coastal wetland system located in the arid landscape of the Sechura and Paita provinces in the Piura Region, northwest Peru. The wetland system is characterized as a connection of lagoons, estuaries, and mangroves and located in a transition zone between the northern edge of the Humboldt Current and the southern end of the tropical eastern Pacific region. These ecosystems are highly productive providing important habitat for migratory birds and other fauna, and ecosystem services for the local communities


An artisanal fishing characterization study is presented for the wetland systems in northern Peru. The main objective is to highlight the importance of these productive activities in the context of the vulnerability faced by wetlands in the face of possible effects of Climate Change. Through surveys and field visits to fishing zones, the study demonstrates how these activities are influenced by extreme scenarios of drought and flooding, as occurred in the last El Niño event.

This year 2023, the El Niño event has generated negative impacts in the destruction of infrastructure and socioeconomic effects at the regional level. However, for other users in the Sechura desert, it is an opportunity to take advantage of the precious water resource. Users of the wetlands evaluated in this study recognize a close relationship with fishing, considering it a traditional activity, an alternative source of income, and a provider of protein for the locality.
