29/09/2025 | The German Nutrition Society (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Ernährung e. V. - DGE) has recently awarded its 2025 Journalism Prize recognising amongts other a feature in German P.M. Magazin about research conducted at the Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT). In the consumer magazine category, reporter Martin Theis and photographer Fabian Weiss received the award for their report ‘Cucumbers for the world’, published in P.M. Magazin on 9 August 2024. The article highlights the growing importance of sustainable aquaculture against the backdrop of overfishing, climate change and uncertain incomes in many coastal communities.

The focus is on a cooperative in Madagascar that is focusing on sea cucumber farming with the support of scientists. These inconspicuous sea creatures are considered a promising source of income in the region – and at the same time a beacon of hope for the protection of marine ecosystems. The journalists also interviewd ZMT aquaculture expert Dr. Andreas Kunzmann for their piece.

The jury praised the report as ‘multi-layered and outstanding sustainability research’. In addition to presenting ecological and social aspects, the article also provides product information on sea cucumbers and culinary insights. Photographs and infographics round off the award-winning work.

The prize, endowed with a total of EUR 10,000, is awarded by the DGE for scientifically sound, original and target group-oriented work in five media categories. Further information on the prize and the winners can be found on the website of the German Nutrition Society (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Ernährung e. V. - DGE).
