Workshop Description:

Researchers in their first leadership positions face multiple challenges: besides excelling in research
and teaching they are also expected to develop management skills and lead people in teams and/or
projects to a successful outcome. Often in sandwich positions without any formal authority.

The workshop starts with essential questions in regard to leadership in academia: e.g. Which (specific)
requirements define leadership in research institutions, especially in the current trend of
internationalisation of research? What is my individual understanding of leadership?

It furthermore discusses central issues of supervising PhD candidates as well master/bachelor
students (from sandwich positions) and lateral leadership contexts such as cooperation projects and
committee work.

The workshop provides room for the reflection of the participant’s experience and questions,
introduces tools for the selection of new team members as well as their instruction and development.
Leadership approaches in sandwich positions and/or in lateral contexts will also be presented. The
workshop also focuses on a key element of leadership: communication and conflict management.
